COURSE DESCRIPTION
This program is designed to provide physicians, nurses, pharmacists
and other healthcare professionals with a broad range of topics
relevant to women's health across the life span. Educational
objectives will be met through didactic presentations, with ample
time for questions and answers. A comprehensive course syllabus is
provided to all registrants. To receive credit for this program,
participants must attend at least one full lecture and submit a
conference evaluation and credit application. Certificates will be
mailed within 8 weeks of the program.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
After attending these sessions, participants will be able to describe & explain:
- Recent advances in contraception and new methods of contraceptive dosing and delivery
- Advances in the diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted
diseases
- Up to date recommendations for the evaluation and treatment of
vaginitis, vulvodynia and other common vulvovaginal disorders
- Emerging concepts in bone physiology, fracture prevention and therapeutic implications
- The importance of recent studies of hormone therapy for the treatment of menopausal symptoms and the application of these findings in clinical management
- The epidemiology, differential diagnoses, diagnostic evaluation and management of thyroid dysfunction in women
- The impact of gender on risk stratification and current preventive measures relevant to cardiovascular health
- Common musculoskeletal problems in the female athlete, and implications for prevention and treatment of injuries
- Gender differences in pain symptomatology, evaluation and treatment
- Current recommendations for the management of diabetes in the pregnant and postpartum patient, including new forms of insulin and protocols for glucose control
- The evidence for and against alternative medicines commonly used by women
- The epidemiology & issues of caring for minority women with HIV
- The appropriate evaluation of patients with incontinence and the role of pharmacologic, behavioral and surgical intervention
- Issues and obstacles in identifying and intervening in partner and family violence
- Medicolegal issues and ways in which to better assist victims of domestic violence
- State of the art diagnostic and treatment modalities in the infertile woman and the current status of assisted reproductive technology
- Issues in the diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ and the most current recommendations for treatment
- Recent studies regarding the efficacy of dietary, pharmacologic, behavioral and bariatric surgical intervention in the management of obesity
- Current guidelines for diagnostic criteria, evaluation and treatment of irritable bowel syndrome
- The fundamental characteristics of premenstrual dysphoric disorder and premenstrual syndrome, and current therapeutic approaches

ACCREDITATION
This activity is jointly sponsored by the Medical Education Collaborative (MEC) & the VCU Institute for Women's Health. It has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education. MEC is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
Medical Education Collaborative designates this education activity for a maximum of 19 category 1 CME credits towards the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those credits that he/she actually spent in the activity.
This program has been approved for 22.8 contact hours of continuing education for RNs, LPNs, LVNs and NPs, including 14.2 pharmacology hours. This program is cosponsored by Medical Education Collaborative, Inc. (MEC) and the VCU IWH. MEC is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission (ANCC) on Accreditation.
This program has been approved for 19 contact hours (1.9 CEUs) of credit for all pharmacists, under a co sponsorship agreement between Medical Education Collaborative and the VCU IWH.
