Women’s Health Research Day 2008

The VCU Institute for Women's Health sponsored the Fourth Annual Women's Health Research Day on Wednesday, April 16, 2008. The event included 56 poster presentations, representing over thirty departments from both VCU campuses. In addition, over two thirds of the posters were eligible for the Elizabeth Fries Young Investigator Award. More than 175 faculty, staff and students attended the event, which included a keynote presentation by Kathleen T. Brady, M.D., Ph.D. Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Medical University of South Carolina; Principal Investigator on BIRCWH, SCOR & CTSA grants. Dr. Brady spoke on “ Knocking Down Silos: Fostering Women’s Health & Gender-Based Research”. In her presentation, Dr. Brady noted that the most innovative and rewarding part of her current position has been found among the active collaborations established between basic and clinical researchers at MUSC, and she encouraged VCU to explore each and every opportunity to foster such programs at our University..

 

A Women’s Health Research Panel discussed Translational Research in Women’s Health: Opportunities to Integrate Basic & Clinical Research with Patient Care ” and featured: Dace Svikis, Ph D –Professor, Department of Psychology and Deputy Director, IWH, Lori Keyser-Marcus, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry , Linda Meloy, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Pamela M. Dillon, PharmD, Research Liaison, Center for Clinical and Translational Research Women’s Health Research Day Chair was: Ann Nichols-Casebolt, Ph.D. Assoc VP for Research Development.

Elizabeth Fries Young Investigator Award

Awarded for the graduate student, fellow, post-doc, or assistant professor whose research shows the most promise to improve women's health.  

This year's recipient was Guadalupe Estrada PhD, fellow in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, for her poster titled “Neutrophils Alter Expression of Vascular Smooth Muscle Collagen Regulating Genes.”

Guadalupe received a certificate as well as a generous stipend donated by Liz Fries' husband, Dr. Viktor Bovbjerg, to cover the registration and travel costs for presentation of her work at a scientific conference. Poster # 27

Abstracts were divided by topic area Clinical - Basic Science – Behavioral, with each category having a top award and an honorable mention.

Behavioral

The top award in the behavioral category went to, Rebecca Foster (Doctoral Student, Psychology), for her poster titled “Caring for a Child Diagnosed with Smith-Magenis Syndrome: Preliminary Analysis of Caregiver Well-Being.” Poster # 29

The top award in the clinical category went to, Kai Cheang (Assistant Professor, Pharmacy), for her poster titled “Relative Importance of Obesity, Insulin Resistance and Metabolic Syndrome in the Elderly: Risk of Cardiovascular Events.” Poster # 21

The honorable mention in the clinical category went to, Fadi Salloum (Postdoctoral Associate, Internal Medicine/Cardiology), this poster is titled “Phosphodiesterase-5 Inhibitors Reduce Myocardial Infarction, Apoptosis and Improve Post-Ischemic Ventricular Function in Female Mice.” Poster # 49
