COURSE DESCRIPTION

This program is designed to provide physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other
healthcare professionals with a broad range of topics relevant to women's
health across the lifespan. Educational objectives will be met through didactic
presentations, with ample time for questions and answers, as well as informal
exchange. A comprehensive course syllabus is provided to all registrants.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

After attending these sessions, successful learners will be able to describe
and explain:

  • Advances in the treatment of women's mental health issues with SSRIs
  • How gender affects treatment strategies in diabetes and current recommendations for management
  • Symptoms of eating disorders in women & girls and current recommendations for diagnosis and intervention
  • The biology of skin color and current effective treatment protocols
  • The significance of genomes in the understanding of estrogens and cardiovascular disease in women
  • Culturally appropriate health care and its impact on patient-provider interactions
  • Implications of the WHI and current recommendations and innovations in
    the treatment of menopausal symptoms
  • Fibromyalgia symtomatology, differential diagnoses, and treatment
    protocols
  • Up-to-date recommendations for assessing benefits and risks of
    medications during pregnancy and lactation
  • Risk stratification and current preventive measures relevant to
    cardiovascular health in women
  • The impact of lifespan changes in women on the diagnosis and treatment
    of migraines
  • Recent surgical advances in breast surgery and reconstruction
  • The basis for Chinese acupuncture and its use for common women's health problems
  • How gender affects medical training, research, and practice in 2004 and an overview of curricular innovation
  • Physiology, etiology, differential diagnoses and current treatment options in female sexual dysfunction
  • Emerging concepts, evaluation, and new treatment modalities for lupus in women
  • Common adolescent gynecology problems and current treatment strategies
  • Emerging concepts in bone physiology, the variables that affect bone strength and architecture, and implications for treatment
  • Applications and limitations of bone densitometry

ACCREDITATION

The School of Medicine, Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia Campus (VCU) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Physicians may claim up to 18.25 hours in Type 1 or Type 2 CME on the Virginia Board of Medicine Continued Competency and Assessment Form required for renewal of an active medical license.

VCU designates this educational activity for a maximum of 18.25 hours in category 1 credit toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the activity.

This continuing education activity meets the criteria of Virginia Commonwealth University and the Southern Association of College and Schools. 1.8 CEUs will be awarded and recorded with the University.

Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing VCU Health System Department of Education and Professional Development is approved as a provider of continuing education in nursing by the Virginia Nurses Association which is accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as an approver of Continuing Education in Nursing. This program has been approved by the ANCC for 15.2 CH units and for pharmacology 10.8 for nurses and nurse practitioners.
