Women's Health 2008: The 16th Annual Congress was held March 28-30, 2008
at The Williamsburg Lodge, Williamsburg, VA
Presented by the Journal of Women's Health and the VCU Institute for Women's Health
The purpose of this dissemination conference was to provide state-of-the-art, evidence- based knowledge on a broad range of issues relevant to women’s health across the lifespan to a target audience that included physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, nurse midwives, pharmacists, and other allied healthcare providers. Over 2 and 1/2 days, 27 expert faculty from around the country addressed a host of topics relevant to the clinical care of women. Included were aspects of breast health, bone health, reproductive health, mental health, and cardiovascular health. As part of the program, a special afternoon session was devoted to the prevention and management of diabetes, including an update in therapeutic options, and management in pregnancy and during lactation. Over the course of the program was an ongoing hands on Skills Workshops entitled “Gizmos & Gadgets” designed to provide instruction in the use of glucometers, injectable insulin delivery devices, assistive insulin devices for visually and physically disabled patients, and diabetic diet instruction for clinicians. Also on the program this year was a special panel of experts addressing the issues surrounding the utility and sustainability of women’s health centers.
The total number in attendance was 577. Attendees came from 32 states, the District of Columbia, Canada and Austria, with 50% from Virginia, 12% from North Carolina, 9% from Pennsylvania, 7% from Maryland and the remainder from states elsewhere. Of respondents, 99% stated that the program met its learning objectives, and felt the information was timely and would influence practice.
