Women's Health Virginia
Women's Health Virginia is the statewide initiative to promote and improve Virginia women's and girls' health and well-being. The organization:
- Focuses attention on the health needs of women and girls in Virginia.
- Addresses women's and girls' health comprehensively and as a continuous process. WHV takes a broad perspective concerning health problems that are usually addressed separately in treatment, education, health policy, and research.
- Takes a multidisciplinary approach which includes economic, educational, cultural, environmental, social, and medical issues.
- Connects people and organizations in the public and private sector and from around the state to work together. WHV involves individuals from business, academia, government and non-profit agencies, community organizations, and individuals who care about their own and their families' health.
Women's Health Network
The Women's Health Network (WHN) for Consumer Health Outreach was established in October 2001 through a two-year contract from the National Library of Medicine. The WHN goal is to provide health education to women in ways that meet their cultural and linguistic needs. This contract was awarded to Virginia Commonwealth University's Institute for Women's Health to work collaboratively with VCU Libraries, the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Richmond Coalition of Safety Net Providers, composed of the VCU Health System, Cross Over Health Center, Fan Free Clinic, North District Health Center, and Vernon J. Harris Community Health Center.
The Women's Health Network addresses women's health needs in three ways: training in using the Internet for consumer health information needs, developing a Web site and sponsoring monthly speakers on health topics. It trains staff and volunteers from Richmond's Coalition of Safety Net Providers to use the Internet to teach clients how to search for health education information. The Women's Health Network Web site includes hundreds oflinks to national and local sources of health information. This site also includes links to materials available on the Web in a variety of languages. In particular, many Web sites are specifically for people who speak Spanish.
