Saba W. Masho, MD, MPH, DrPH is an Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Community Health at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Masho earned her MD and MPH from Addis Ababa University in her native Ethiopia and obtained her Doctorate in Public Health from University of California at Berkeley with a concentration in Maternal and Child Health and Epidemiology.
Dr. Masho is an exceptional researcher and has made significant contributions in the improvement of the health status of women and children. She has been a principal investigator and co-investigator in the area of sexual violence prevention, provision of comprehensive care to underserved pregnant women, and assessment of women’s health status. Dr. Masho has evaluated several programs and projects and is currently the evaluation director for the federally funded Richmond Healthy Start Project that focuses on the provision of comprehensive perinatal care to women. She has authored a number of peer-reviewed journal articles and a book chapter. She has given numerous scientific presentations and has moderated several community workshops. Among her recent work include a manuscript that showed the strong association between obesity and premenstrual syndrome and a monograph providing the health status of women in Virginia.
Dr. Masho taught research methods courses to medical, master of public health and PhD students.Before she joined Virginia Commonwealth University, she taught Epidemiology and Biostatistics to medical students at the Marshall University School of Medicine’s Department of Family and Community Health in West Virginia. Presently, she is teaching the principles of epidemiology and advanced epidemiology course to master of public health and PhD students respectively. Dr. Masho has been the recipient of the Virginia Commonwealth University’s Outstanding Teachers Award and has been nominated for the Best Teachers and Mentors award.
